We pull the rug of success from under our feet

Constantly shifting from one method to another pulls the rug of success from under our feet.

There are endless ways to be successful. There are many versions of a profitable business. There are many lifestyles labeled “idyllic.” There are hundreds of ways to get there, and there are thousands of teachers who will show you their methods. But when we switch between different methods, or try to incorporate multiple at the same time, we take conflicting actions and stall our progress.

It’s exciting to find someone who speaks your language. It’s enticing to jump on board with a new style of thought. It’s tempting to synthesize methods from a number of great teachers, because we feel like we’re getting the best of all worlds. As someone who’s done it a lot, I know.

While it feels smart to absorb information from many teachers, we’ll soon realize we haven’t made meaningful progress in any single area. We’d be better off listening to just one person, absorbing all their content, sticking with their approach for 18-24 months, and then blocking out all other voices. Then, we’ll have a real chance to gain momentum, and to see if the method really works without getting distracted.

It’s not radical action that leads to success. It’s mundane action done with radical consistency.
