Can you say the same thing twice?
A big block many digital creators face is feeling like they can’t say the same thing twice.
This isn’t true.
The current social media landscape is very welcoming of repetition. Let me prove it.
Do you remember every line from the last movie you watched? No. You remember the overarching plot and maybe a few quotes. But you don’t remember every line. Here’s the thing: the last movie you watched was less than two hours long in a focused environment. The average American spends two hours and 14 minutes each day on social media…in an unfocused environment.
One of my favorite authors, Donald Miller, recently published a book called How to Grow Your Small Business. It has a collection of general business, marketing, and leadership advice for small business owners. Two years prior, Miller wrote a book on business and leadership, and five years prior, he wrote a book on marketing. How to Grow Your Small Business is simply a repackaging of ideas he’s already published. And we’re all eating it up.
If you feel like people won’t respond to your work because you’ve already published something similar, that’s just resistance talking. They barely, barely remember what you published last week—by no fault of your own! It’s just the way things are now.
If you have an idea or a story that you’re passionate about, please tell it again. Our by-the-minute media landscape doesn’t give the space that your ideas need to breathe.
