Apply Your Best to Other Industries

I have a good friend who podcasts. He’s been at it for a few years, and he’s interviewed amazing guests.

Yesterday, we were talking about his next move. With the skills he’s learned and the connections he has, we wondered what the next steps could be for his career.

After chatting about one of the top podcasters in the world right now, Joe Rogan, we came to the conclusion that Rogan isn’t where he is without first being a television host and comedian. The connections he has, and the wealth of hosting experience took him to where he is today.

We mapped out a similar approach for my friend. Instead of widening the podcast approach, and doing more in that space (like production and consulting), why not boil down the hard skills of interviewing and hosting, and use those in other arenas? My friend could be a great host for conferences, round tables, live events, and commercials with the skills he’s learned. Once people see him in different arenas, everything will drive back to his podcast.

Maybe there’s an insight in here for you. Instead of trying to own an entire industry, what if you took what you were best at and applied it to other industries?

Just a thought.
