There Are No Gatekeepers - 1 of 3
There are no gatekeepers.
As we get further into the digital age, this is a good thing and a bad thing.
It’s good because no one can stop you from building an audience online. The tools are free and available to post your work. There aren’t label execs, TV producers, or art gallery curators who can stop you from posting your work and building an audience. They don’t make the decisions for everyone anymore. So create and publish! The time has never been better.
It’s bad because no one can give you a free pass to success. Cultivating an engaged online audience is something you alone must do. It’s only attained through consistency and generosity. People with big audiences online cultivated them by posting consistently for years on end without seeing any return. Scroll back on their Instagram or YouTube channel and you’ll probably find some mediocre work without many likes.
It’s a double edged sword. If you want to build an audience online, great. The only gatekeeper is yourself.
How consistent and generous can you be?
