The freest person in the world

The freest person in the world is the person who can’t be bought.

Bad guys in movies like to say “everyone has a price.” That there’s a financial figure, career aspiration, or deep desire that will get anyone to do anything. This may be true. But what if we raised our prices?

What if we weren’t so quick to follow opportunities, or explore shady promises, simply because they’re loosely connected to our goals? What if we raised our standard for our goals, narrowed our focus on them, so we weren’t so susceptible when people try to buy us?

The punch line of life is that we only get one of them. The people who are in on the joke have a higher price—they know that the most precious moments are only experienced in the present. The people who fall for life’s pranks again and again are the ones who think they can transcend life’s limitations.

What are you here for? Why do you get up in the morning? How do you wish to spend your only precious life? Because make no mistake: you are spending it. Another day, another swipe of the debit card, and none of us know when the account balance reaches zero.
