Statue of responsibility

“There is a beautiful statue dedicated to liberty in New York City’s harbor. There is no such monument to responsibility. That’s something we have to look inside ourselves to find.”
–Ryan Holiday

The western world cherishes freedom and liberty dearly. It holds these values higher than most others in its culture. Of course, honesty and dependability and intelligence and wisdom are important to us, too. But are they as important? What kinds of movies do we enjoy watching the most? What kind of music gets the most plays? We can’t get enough art about personal freedom.

It’s worth a thought—is this another layer of resistance for us? Is our commitment to freedom and liberty just another creative block that keeps us from consistency and generosity with our work?
