How To Get Over Creative Blocks

Get Bored

Do you ever wonder how you used to be so creative when you were younger? It’s because you used to be bored far more often than you are now. Maybe you daydreamed on the bus. Maybe you wrote lyrics in class. Maybe you drew pictures in church. The fact is, boredom produces creativity. Our brains can only handle being bored for so long before they start coming up with ideas.

Now, we fight boredom endlessly with constant access to social media and texting. Whenever we get bored, we open our phones and satiate that boredom. But in the process, we’re sacrificing our mind’s ability to be creative.

Set a Timer and Delete It

Another great way to overcome a creative block is to decide you’ll delete what you’re working on. I’m serious! If you want a quick jolt of creative energy, set a timer for an hour and promise yourself you’ll delete or throw away whatever you create in that hour.

It all started like this anyway. We used to create with no pressure and no audience in our minds. Now, the invisible audience keeps us from creative freedom. This is a trick I’ve been using for a few years and it’s effective for me. Try it out!

Call a Creative Friend

We get too attached to our projects. If you have a creative friend in an adjacent field, give them a call. They’ll be able to bounce ideas with you and give a fresh perspective to your project. And they’ll speak freely, since they’re not that emotionally invested in it.

Take what’s helpful to you, leave the rest and keep creating.
