Confidence–A Little Thing That Changes Everything

Confidence is an elusive thing. It’s a little thing, a barely-real thing. That somehow changes everything.

I’m fascinated by what I’ll call the “costume effect.” I had a friend who dressed up like Joe Exotic from Netflix’s Tiger King for Halloween. He borrowed some of his girlfriend’s jewelry for the outfit. Simple gold necklaces and bracelets, stuff like that. I caught him taking a few looks in the mirror throughout that evening, and a week later, he hit me up for recommendations on mens Jewelry brands.

A few weeks ago, I got married. I had my groomsmen wear plaid slacks, a white button down shirt at least 3 buttons undone, and the coolest loafers they could get their hands on. I saw a few of my closest friends, some of whom I’ve known for decades, transform from neatly folded up Dockers guys, to shoulders back, glint-in-their-eyes yacht guys.

Confidence.

I hesitated to write this, as it doesn’t fit in my typical content buckets. But I had to, because it feels important somehow. Protect your confidence. Do what you think is cool. Buy the shoes you’ve been wanting for a while. Take the risk. You’ve only got one life, and there’s no use spending it folded up.
