Top 3 Tips For Making Great Ads - Ads Review

After three and a half months of digital ads reviews, I’ve decided it’s time to switch it up. Over the past few months, many of the same lessons kept emerging, which is a good sign that it’s time for a recap and a refresh.

Here are my top three takeaways for making your own digital ads, from over three months of studying them.

Show The Product

Whenever I broke down digital ads from top brands like Nike, Converse, Vans, or MVMT, I always discovered the same thing: They spend their money on showing customers their product. In the age of digital ads, most platforms give customers the option to skip or scroll past your ad. If they’re only seeing your ad for one second (or less), what’s the best thing you could do with that second? Show them the product. The biggest brands do this constantly to increase brand lift.

If you’re creating an ad, start here.

Make it Creative

The decreasing cost of content creation and advertising is amazing. But it also often means that small businesses won’t put as much creativity or thought into their advertising, since it’s so cheap. Major brand players hire the most creative people on the planet to help them differentiate. But when it comes to a $200 ad spend, most small brands just phone it in.

We learned from Bellroy, Old Spice, Dollar Shave Club, and Kinetic Society that creativity drives interest. It’s like a good rock song–many of the principles may be the same, but a little creativity can go a long way in making a hit.

Make It Really Good

We learned from Vrbo, BetterHelp, and a number of Super Bowl ads that making a really good ad is still the best way to catch customers’ attention. You’re interrupting their experience, so be generous, fun, creative, and don’t take yourself too seriously. There are so many components to each ad. Consistently ask yourself how each one could be better.

In many cases, ads need to go out the door before they’re perfect–actually, that’s always the case. But with each ad you create, find one thing to improve on and implement it for the next round. Little by little, you’ll be improving and making knockout ads.

What’s Next?

What’s next for the ads review? It’s expanding. I’ll be digging into good and bad copywriting, graphic design, broadcast ads, websites, and more.

See you tomorrow!
