Consistency vs Quality
Which is more important? Consistency or quality?
James Dean only acted in a few movies, but he did them so well for his day, that people remember him as a legend long after his death. So maybe quality is more important.
Casey Neistat published 534 daily vlogs in a row, growing his channel to over 4 million subscribers in the process. These are interesting content pieces, no doubt, but no one who takes film seriously would call them compelling artistic works. From a filmmaking perspective, they break so many “rules.” And yet, millions of people viewed them every single day, becoming deeply attached to Neistat and his perspective. So maybe consistency is more important.
But sometimes, consistency can get in the way of quality. I feel that way sometimes about this blog. I feel like if I wasn’t committed to publishing every single day, I would have more time to do research, and make stronger points. On the other hand, quality can get in the way of consistency. The need to create with the best gear, or solid lighting, a good concept can paralyze us, stifling our creativity entirely.
The hope is that as consistency grows, quality does too. Like the left foot and the right foot work together to walk, consistency and quality will grow together in the digital age. The important thing is to not let one get in the way of the other for too long.
