Trust Over Attention
Trust is greater than attention.
A community is greater than an audience.
Impact is greater than inspiration.
This morning, I sat outside, reading an article about an almost famous actor from a hit Netflix show. Well, he’s plenty famous already, even in his eyes, but the article was angled to show how he’s not quite famous enough and is about to get more famous. The article was from a publication that loves famous people, so no one is to blame here, but the whole thing got me thinking.
Capitalism creates a media sphere that rewards us for things we don’t even want. If you get real with yourself for a moment, and pause to weigh the benefits of each, you would choose trust, community, and impact over attention, an audience, and inspiration. But since the latter are quick sells, and more profitable to write about, we begin to value those above the things we know are better.
Do you want a community to trust you for the impact you make? Or would you settle for an audience to pay attention to you for the inspiration you provide? Don’t be fooled by what our culture sells you. Take a moment to realize what’s important to you.
Because the trajectory you’re on now should reflect what’s important to you. Not what’s important to our culture.
