The Simplest Marketing Lesson
Marketing comes from the word “market.” And if that’s all you knew about marketing, you would be in a better place than thousands of brands and businesses are today.
You see, people hear the word “marketing,” and immediately start imagining commercials, and sponsorships, and billboards, and t-shirts, and print ads. They forget that marketing comes from the word “market.” If you think about a market, it’s a dedicated place where goods are bought and sold. In our day, markets are usually owned by one company, but classically, markets were open spaces where hundreds of merchants could set up a table and start selling. Kind of like a farmers market is today.
So my point is this: good marketing shows up to the market. Good marketing understands where customers spend time, and it goes there. It understands its customers. It’s easy to get caught up in how marketing will make you look. But the most effective marketing understands where it’s customer spends time, and goes there.
