It's Your Job to Stay Up to Date
If you work in media, it’s your job to stay up to date on what’s “in.”
The frequency with which you should stay up to date is dependent on the medium you work in. If you work in social media, you should be checking trends and memes daily. If you work in slower digital media, like commercials, music videos, and branded content, you should be checking in on what’s new every few weeks or so. Jumping on the front end of trends can make a big difference. If you work in advertising, you should know what been said on a quarterly basis. And if you work on long-form content, like books and movies, you should know what’s happening every year.
I consider consuming content part of my job. This can be a difficult line to walk, as you try to avoid irrelevance on one side, and redundancy on the other.
It doesn’t take too long to curate a set of content streams that will inform and inspire your work. Subscribe to the top youTube channels in your space. Bookmark the top blogs. Get a few industry publications delivered to your house. And start conversations with people in your space. If you missed something, one of your friends will let you know about it.
It’s part of your job.
