When Problems Arise
When problems arise, usually people don’t want to hear all the options.
They usually want to decide between 2-3 of the best options, and want to be informed as to why those are the best options.
On set, sometimes things need to change. Maybe the lights don’t fit like we hoped. Maybe we’re running short on time. Maybe there’s too much light bleed in the room.
When problems arise, my job as a producer is to come up with 2-3 options on the fly. I have to think: what are some potential solutions or compromises? What are the pros and cons of each? Which one seems best to me?
Then, my job is to package up the options and communicate them to the director and the brand, so we can all agree on the best plan of action. It can be stressful at times, but I find that if I let people know what’s going on, even if it’s bad, we solve the problem and keep moving.
Good luck out there!
