A Successful Relationship

“What would make this a successful relationship?”

Someone I know asks his clients this question before he starts working on a project with them. It’s brilliant.

  • It lets the client feel heard. They want a successful relationship,

  • It sets expectations straight. Everyone comes into projects with expectations, and regardless of how the project turns out, unmet expectations can leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

  • It gives you an opportunity to vet the client. If their idea of a successful relationship is calling you at 3am, then maybe you don’t want that successful relationship.

  • It gives you an opportunity to let the client know what your workflow is. This is a great way to actually have a successful client relationship. They’ll play by your rules, and you’ll have what you need to get the job done.

The reason I like this question is because it gives you all the previous insights, without sounding withholding or non-collaborative.

Good luck out there!
