Time passes at the same rate, whether we’re enjoying it or not

I remember New Year’s Eve 2019 like it was yesterday.

You probably do too.

It was the last major holiday celebration before COVID-19 shut down the world in  March of 2020. For years, I’ve cherished the memories of that night in my mind. I’ve held them in my hands. Turned them over. Caressed them.

Slowly, month after month, year after year, things got back to the way they were. But things never really felt the same after 2020, did they?

They didn’t for me.

There’s a certain haze that’s settled over everything since 2020. Millions of people died. Life gained a certain fragile quality. I remember 2019 so clearly. Reality seems foggy since 2019—like a bathroom mirror after a shower.

Here’s a crazy realization: that night I remember so vividly happened almost five years ago.

Time passes at the same rate, whether we’re enjoying it or not. Every minute is 60 seconds long, whether we’re having a good time or a bad time. Every hour is 60 minutes long, whether we’re appreciating it or not.

If you’re waiting for the fog to clear off the mirror of life…it won’t. You have to wipe it off. You have to keep living your life, making the most of what’s in front of you. Because it makes no difference to time if you’re making the most of it or not. It keeps marching on.

But you? You’ve got but one life. You’ve got an unknown number of minutes and seconds left here to appreciate everything that surrounds you.

Stop waiting.
