Be Your A Barista Of Your Industry

 
 

I’m amazed by the artisan mentality that so many of my barista friends have. They know so much about the coffee they serve, and they serve it with such passion for their community. 

It seems a bit ironic to me, because most of them don’t own the shop they work at, and many of them are striving to work in a different industry altogether. Coffee is just a job for them while they study, or create art in another field. 

Part of this makes me sad. The startup capital needed to open a cafe in a big city right now is prohibitive. Even the baristas who want to open their own shops in their neighborhoods lack the resources to make it happen. Meanwhile, those who do have the money to open shops are disconnected from the daily operations. The owner + operator + artist is a rare thing to find in our economy. 

But part of this is also inspiring to me. Maybe you know a barista like this. Someone who works so fervently and passionately at something that is just a job to them, a means to an end. They put so much effort into doing their job well and treating people well. 

Whatever your story, and wherever you work, strive to bring a little bit of that artisan mentality to your job. Even if you won’t be there forever. Especially if you won’t be there forever. Be a barista of your own industry.
