Bring A Positive Tone To Set
The attitude and tone you bring to your work environments has a strong effect on the end product.
I wrote about this a little bit in my post about tension, but I’ve been experiencing this firsthand the past week.
I’m working with someone who trusts me, expresses that, and tells me I’m doing a good job. Do you know what this does for me? It increases my confidence. It makes me feel like I’m worth trusting. It makes me not want to to let my client down. It elevates my work.
I’m working with someone else who doesn’t trust me. Not their fault–they don’t know me yet. But the tone they bring to our interactions is one of doubt, worry, and distrust. Do you know what this does for me? It makes me feel apathetic toward the interaction. As if even the good things I do aren’t good, so I’m not inspired to elevate.
I try really hard to bring a positive energy to everyone I work with on set, because that has a profound effect on the final product. If they know I trust them and believe in them, they’ll be empowered to make better creative decisions on the fly. A coarse tone of distrust might earn you a short-term productivity win. People will be motivated so they can get you off their back–but it doesn’t create a sustainable culture or lasting relationships.
Bring a positive tone to your interactions. It’s the best long-term decision.
