Why Do We Wish Time Would Pass Faster?

I caught myself wishing time would pass faster the other day.

I asked myself why I wasn’t a successful writer yet. I wished time would pass quicker, maybe into my 30s or 40s when I had published a few books, had a TED talk, and spoken on a few podcast circuits.

Why do we wish time would pass faster?

It’s the only non-renewable resource we have. It’s quite literally the only thing we can’t make more of, and we can’t get back. On a whim, I was wishing away more than a decade of my life, just so I could get to the part I’m working towards.

Here’s an exercise: write down all the things you’ll miss about today, ten years from now. For me, I’ll miss my cool, vintage Toyota 4Runner. I’ll miss my hair. I’ll miss my flexible schedule. I’ll miss weekend afternoons when no one is calling me. When no one is asking for anything.

I write this as a reminder to myself, and maybe to you. Every day we have is a gift. Every moment we have is worth cherishing. Trust the process of what you’re working towards, learn to fall in love with it. Because if we can’t fall in love with the moments we have now, we’ll be doomed to miss them in the future.
