Spend Some Time Alone Today
“It is difficult to think clearly in rooms filled with other people. It’s difficult to understand yourself if you are never by yourself. It’s difficult to have much in the way of clarity and insight if your life is a constant party and your home is a construction site.”
–Ryan Holiday, Stillness is the Key
Spend some time alone today. The busyness of our work and our lives is a wonderful thing. We are indeed blessed to have work we enjoy. But too much of a good thing is still too much. If you want to be able to embody your work with authenticity and passion, you need some time away from it.
Everything we experience has a deep effect on us whether we realize it or not. The people we are with, the media we consume, the choices we make. These things slowly shape us, like water passing over a rock in a stream. An afternoon spent doing something doesn’t mean much. But years spent in the stream shapes who we become.
In his book, Think Like A Monk, Jay Shetty says, “When we fill up our lives and leave ourselves no room to reflect, those distractions become our values by default.”
Walk out of the stream today. Even if only for an hour. Find a place up the hill, overlooking the water, where you can consider your place within it.
