How To Enjoy Life More
Today a friend texted to tell me that he watched a college football game with his dad the other day. And he had a good time.
My friend is not the kind of person to be into football. He’s not big, he’s not super tall, he’s not masculine in the macho sense of the word. Frankly, football wouldn’t really be into him.
“Who am I becoming?” he jokingly asked.
I told him he was becoming a more well-rounded individual. Because the more things we learn to enjoy, the more enjoyable life becomes.
I get it though.
We can’t just like everything. And moreover, we can’t be accepted by everyone. If something is niche enough to have a prime demographic, then it has an un-prime demographic. It has a group of people it’s not for.
But we often have a knee-jerk reaction to dislike things we don’t understand. If we don’t know the rules of football, or the names of classical composers, or the flavor profiles of Indian food, we assume we won’t like it.
But the fact remains: the more things we learn to enjoy, the more enjoyable life becomes.
Deciding to dislike something is a great way to not let anyone know that you don’t know what’s going on. It’s a great way to save face. But a great way to enjoy life is to let people know we are new, and ask for their advice. I think we’d be surprised at how fascinating so many things are if we took the time to ask questions and learn about them.
